Week commencing 3rd February 2020

This week, Downing class have been transporting themselves to the Amazon Rainforest in their brilliantly written information texts. Here is some of the text that we have come up with together:

Survival is tough in the dense flora and fauna of the Amazon Rainforest, where animals and plants are in never ending competition for the resources for life. 

Spanning nine nations across South America, the Amazon Rainforest is the largest and most biodiverse tropical rainforest in the world, housing up to 390 billion individual trees.

You find yourself clambering over roots and vines as the dappled shafts of sunlight strengthen; your skin stings as the insects feast and your breath feels clammy. Before you, tree trunks block any sort of straight path and above you, the canopy filters green light. Underfoot, the ground is damp and squelchy; droplets of water cling to every available surface. Howls and cries echo from every direction, turning the rainforest into an orchestra of life. Welcome to the Amazon Rainforest: home to one in ten of every known species in the world. 

In maths, we have been working on problems involving different units of measure. All of the cooking that the children have been doing at home has certainly been helping with their understanding of grams, kg, ml and litres!

Downing class are making good progress with our 'evolution and inheritance' topic which we will continue with next term. This week, they considered how plants might have adapted to living in the rainforest.
