Starting in Nursery

We can't wait to meet all of the new children starting Nursery in September.

Before September

You will be invited to a parent/carer information session in July and we will be offering ‘home visits’ in September before your child starts. These will give you the opportunity to meet the team, discuss your child’s interests more and ask any questions. A member of the team will contact you to book in a good date and time.

What should my child bring?
Please make sure that your child always has a full set of spare clothes at Nursery (including underwear and socks). These can be kept in a bag on their peg and will be used if your child gets wet or dirty. It is important that all clothes (including shoes) are clearly named. The school will provide your child with a school book bag (for letters and art work to be sent home in) and a water bottle (which your child will have access to throughout the day). You must provide nappies, wipes and nappy sacks if your child requires them; these can be kept in your child’s spare clothes bag. If you are concerned about toilet training, please let us know – we are happy to provide support, advice and work with you as your child moves towards independent toileting. It is important that your child is dressed appropriately for our changeable English weather. We play and learn outside in most weathers, so please ensure that you send your child in with a waterproof coat and warm layers if it is rainy or cold. Similarly, if it is sunny please make sure that your child has a named sun hat with them at Nursery. Your child should also bring in a pair if named wellington boots which can be kept on our welly rack.

The priority for Nursery children is for them to be comfortable so that they can access all learning opportunities. One of the primary objectives of a child’s year in Nursery is that they become much more independent with their dressing and going to the toilet. Shoes should have Velcro fastenings rather than laces and trousers and skirts ideally should have elastic waists rather than tricky buttons and belts. Darker coloured tops are a preference over white as they are easier to keep clean. The school provides a piece of fruit or vegetable for your child in each session at snack time. Your child will also be given the option of drinking milk or water. Sometimes we will also ask children to bring in some extra fruit to share out with their friends. Fawcett only - Children can have school lunches or bring their own packed lunch in. Lunches will be eaten in the space next to the main nursery room from 12.10 - 12.40 p.m. They will always have a known adult with them to support them during this valuable learning time.

Please make sure that inhalers and automatic adrenaline injectors (epipens) are in the original packaging and kept in a see through plastic box labelled carefully with your child’s name. Read stories with your child and talk about the books that you have shared. Do lots of counting. As well as counting objects you can count steps or jumps! Talk and sing with your children. Practise dressing and undressing, this will help them manage toileting and changing their clothes. Practise using the toilet independently.
