Dear Year One

We hope you enjoyed your weekly learning last week. We would love to hear from you perhaps every 2 weeks, see rota below. For example, if your family name is Williams (W)  then we would like to hear from you 4th-7th May and 18th – 22nd May, but if your family name is Gordon (G), then we would like to hear from you 27th – 1st May and 18th 22nd May. Please email our school office, this way they won’t have too many emails, thank you for your cooperation. 

 

 The most important thing you can be doing is reading regularly, 5 nights a week, for about 5 to 10 minutes. Don’t forget to write this up in your reading record books, thank you.

It would be good if you could exercise, Joe Wicks (You Tube) or look on the CBeebies website where there are a choice of different presenters. 

Do as much as you can, but enjoy your learning. Don’t forget, there are lots of fun activities to do on Education City too!

Phonics 

This week we will focus on the ‘ow’ ‘ou’ sounds.. Here are a few fun ideas that would support this at home. 1. Make your own or print off the dice game, roll a die and say the word for ow and ou

2. Use post it notes to stick our sounds around the house and go on a sound hunt – eg go and find ow and ou. 

3. Education city - we have set some phonics tasks

4. Word sort - come up with as many words as you can that this sound - sort them into groups ‘ou’ and ‘ow’ - look at where the sound comes within these words - do you notice a pattern? 

English 

This week will be different and you only have one task to take part in ‘Read it Again’, As a school we are taking part in the 'Read it Again' storybook competition online. Some of the school adults have filmed themselves reading the books and now you need to go and watch the videos and vote on your favourite. The videos and the link to the quiz where you can vote is in a folder on the 'Home Learning' tab within 'The Trumpington Federation' at the top of the page (/page/?title=Read+it+Again+Competition&pid=37). Please make sure you vote by Saturday 9th May. Then we will count the votes and announce the winning book!

We have also included a common exception word mat for you to complete, there will be a different one each week!

Some of the wonderful teachers at the Trumpington Federation have recorded some videos for your English this week. Watch one video per day and complete the activities that go with each video. We are using our Talk4Writing to write a beautiful piece of writing about the seaside!

Maths

Last week we asked you to look at length. This week’s focus is weight and capacity. 

Activity 1:

Collect lots of items from around your house/garden or when you are out on a walk. These could be toys, books, cotton wool balls, feathers, rocks etc. Feel all of the items and order them from heaviest to lightest. Discuss why you have put them in this order. Can you go and find another item in the house which you think would be heavier than your heaviest item? Can you go and find another item in the house which you think would be lighter than your lightest item? Record your findings on a piece of paper either by drawing the images in order, taking pictures and ordering them or writing the items in order - Heaviest to Lightest. 

Activity 2: 

Bake something - look at the measurements needed for each of your ingredients. What is the biggest measurement in your recipe/ what is the smallest? What different types of measurements can you spot in the recipe eg, Grams, Kilograms, cups, teaspoons, milliliter etc. Discuss which units are used for liquid and which are used for solid.  Measure all of your ingredients accurately using scales. 

Challenge: Weight your ingredients before you use them. Workout how much you have left after using them. eg. If I start with 500g of flour and use 200g in the cake, how many grams do I have left?

Activity 3:

Label some different bowls, bottles, pots, pans with Full, Half Full, Empty, Almost Full, Almost Empty. Fill them according to the label. They could be filled with water, pasta, pom poms, stones, sand etc. 

Order these objects from Full to empty - Which one has the most? Which one has the least? How do you know? 

Activity 4:

Label the objects used a filled in activity 3 - A, B, C etc. Compare the items using More than (<) and less than (>) Take pictures or draw the items and write a sentence underneath eg A > C.

Science

Science – make your own table, draw your birds and then enjoy counting them. You could use a tally chart, I have given you the key vocabulary but not named each bird, you can choose how many birds you want to do.  I am very lucky to have a garden and I have seen:

Great tits, blue tits, magpies, wood pigeons, blackbirds and robins.

If I walk to the shops I would see:

Wood pigeons, carrion crows, magpies and house sparrows.
