Welcome to DAY 57.   

THE 57 CHALLENGE

Many of you may have taken part in the ‘100 things for Captain Tom.’ 

Here is another challenge for you.  The UK has been in lock-down since 23^rd March.  On Monday 18^th May, that will be:  57 days.  What task, activity or exercise could you do 57 times?  Be as imaginative as you can.

Here are some ideas:

• 57 times up and down the stairs
• Read 57 books
• Write 57, 57 times
• Tell 57 jokes
• Do 57 kind things
• Walk for 57 minutes

You could make a note of your challenge, film it and speed it up, take photographs or just feel successful, 57 times.  (Please make sure your choice is safe.)

Maths

Starters

Before beginning your daily maths tasks, start by sparking up your energy by answering mental maths questions and recalling your times tables. By the end of this term, you should be fluent in the 2, 5, 10, 3, 4, 6 and 8 times tables. Learning is fun so if you are struggling with these why not play a game at the same time, like Tables Tennis below! Daily 10 is also an exciting way to quiz yourself using quick recall and metal maths skills. You can select Levels 1, 2 or 3 and you are in charge of how much time you have to answer! Good luck!

Fractions

This week we have a HOT TASK for you to complete and hand in for feedback on google classrooms.  To do this, please take a photograph of your answers and submit them.   We are very much looking forward to seeing your results.   (The task is attached below.)

Our new unit will be a recap and continuation of work on angles.

Below are the links to 5 lessons you can do.  Each one has some tasks and activities to complete.  Do not worry about printing worksheets off.  A pencil, ruler and paper should be all you need.  The tasks are all marked for you as you watch the video.  In some of the lessons you are asked to make an ANGLE DETECTOR.  This is 2 strips of paper or card and a split pin.  I imagine not all of you will have a split pin.  DON’T WORRY, I have 2 alternatives.  You can use two pencils and an elastic band or two bits of paper and a paper clip.

EXTENSION CHALLENGE

Look at some flags of the world.  (I wonder how many you know by heart.)  Identify as many of the right angles, acute angles and obtuse angles as you can within your chosen flags. Alternatively you could design a new flag and mark the angles. 

MATHS in ART

Using your maths lessons form this week, make a picture.  Here are the rules:  The picture must only use straight lines.  YOU MUST USE A RULER or STRAIGHT EDGE to draw the initial lines.  Wherever the lines intersect, you have created an angle.  How many angles can you count?  (I bet there are loads.)  You could colour different angles according to size: right angles might be different shades of blue, acute angles could be in shades of yellow and obtuse angles could be in reds.  If you get very inventive, you might merge colours and angles together.

Our class reading work this week is based on fairy stories.  We have chosen Jack and the Beanstalk as it is a story most of you will already know.  Fairy stories have particular patterns to them.  They were passed down by word of mouth.  They have elements of magic and traditional characters such as witches, goblins, elves, etc.  As you read, ask an adult to talk to you using some of these questions.

What makes you think that?

What words might you use to describe…..?

How can you tell?

If you were there, what might you…?

Can you explain why you think that? 

What clues have you found that make you think….?

If the character were older/younger/?

Why is this story a Fairy Tale?

There are three different versions of our story.  You can choose the one that most suits you.  I have labelled them as *MILD,  **MEDIUM  or ***SPICY .  At the end of each story there are questions to answer.  (The stories are attached below.)

English Writing

You should now have read and story mapped the re-birth story of THE TIN FOREST.

MONDAY:  The story works as a circle.  It begins and ends in the same way but with small differences.  The change is like the re-birth, a new beginning. 

Task:  List 5 changes that happen in the story. 

TUESDAY:  Sentence openers.  As we work towards inventing our own re-birth story, it is helpful to look at the ‘tune’ of this text.  (The Tin Forest)  Write a list of sentence openers that you could ‘Magpie.’ 

EG:  There was once a…….

         Every single morning…….

Now think about creating a few examples of sentences that complete these starters. 

WEDNESDAY:  In our short writing task today we are going to use emotions to describe objects.  For example,  ‘THE GLOOMY, BLUE CHAIR’.  (I know that we don’t usually think of chairs as having feelings but it makes for very interesting writing.)

Task:  Make a list of 5 emotions.  (Gloomy, excited, nervous, hysterical, terrified.)

            Make a list of 5 colours.

           Make a list of 5 nouns.    (Blue, orange, etc.)

Now, put them together to write 5 sentences.  Here is one:   Quietly, the nervous, orange table held its breath.

THURSDAY:  VERBS for effect.  (THIS PIECE OF WORK IS FOR SUBMISSION) 

Read the story again.  The author chooses words carefully to enable us to understand the emotions.  VERBS are action words.  They tell us what is happening (laughing, breathing, eating, running, dancing, walking, shuffling.)

Task:  Make a list of 5 nouns.  (Try to choose things that are alive but if you want to challenge yourself you can choose any noun you like.)

Now decide on a thing they might be doing.  (This does not have to be sensible.) 

Now add an adverb.  (This will describe how they are doing it.)  

EG:    dog,     jumping,    excitedly. 

This can be turned into a sentence.  The scruffy dog jumped excitedly onto the nervous kitchen table.

Do 5 different sentences.  Underline the verbs.

FRIDAY:  Alphabetical order

•  * MILD        Choose 5 words from the story which begin with different letters.   Put them into alphabetical order.
• ** MEDIUM         Choose 10 words from the story, put them into alphabetical order.
• ***SPICY          Choose 6 words from the story that all begin with the same letter.  Put them into alphabetical order. 

 

GRAMMAR

There are 3 different grammar mats to look at.  (The answers are included on a different sheet in case you need help.)  You can choose:  *MILD, **MEDIUM or ***SPICY.  Have-A-Go, then see whether you got them right by marking them yourself.   (They are attached below.)

This week we are looking at word families.

AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES

GEOGRAPHY

I have included a Power Point about volcanoes.  (Attached below)

Task 1:  Watch the Power Point and make a list of words related to this new topic.

Task 3:  Get EXPLOSIVE!!!  You can make your own home-made volcano. 

Use recycled materials and a bottle.  (The bottle will be in the centre of your volcano and acts as the magma container.)  You can use card, paper, cloth, mud, or anything you like to build a volcano around the bottle.  Then, add the ingredients below and watch it erupt.  MAKE SURE YOU SET IT OFF OUTSIDE!!!

Baking Soda and Vinegar Volcano

This is the classic science fair project volcano. The baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) reacts with the vinegar (weak acetic acid) to produce carbon dioxide gas. The detergent traps the gas, which is heavier than air, so it flows down the side of the volcano.

• warm water
• liquid dishwashing detergent
• red or orange food coloring
• baking soda
• vinegar

1. Pour warm water into the volcano until it is 1/2 to 3/4 of the way full.
2. Add several drops of food coloring.
3. Add a squirt of detergent. This helps the ‘lava’ foam up and flow.
4. Add a couple of spoonfuls of baking soda.
5. When you are ready to start the eruption, pour vinegar into your volcano.
6. You can recharge the volcano with more baking soda and vinegar.

Note: If you don’t have vinegar, you can use another acidic liquid, like lemon juice or orange juice.

ART
